Vostok Caliber 2414 Service Notes

Last weekend, I decided to do a badly needed COA on a 2414 movement. The trouble is, there is no service info available anywhere that I can find. The articles submitted by Marc_wl were very helpful, but I decided to fully disassemble the movements. So, for safety’s sake, I documented the disassembly using the camera.

The next challenge was (of course) the assembly, what to oil, which oil to use, and how much. Again, there are no guidelines.

What I did was to find data sheets on other movements. I used info available from ETA and Seiko, and took what I learned in the Time Zone Watch School course 1 and 2, and made an educated guess as to what would work for the Vostok.

After all that, I printed up my notes, and did a COA on another 2414 movement. All in all, using the different junk that seems to accumulate, I was able to to take 3 broken or barely running movements and build 2 that run well.

It occurred to me that this is a resource that I can share, so here goes. What I ask is that those of you who have watchmaking experience, please critique my choices of assembly, cleaning, and lubrication. If you have any suggestions for different choices that I could have made, please let me know about it. Also, those of you in the know about watch innards, I tried to name each part. If you can think of a better name for a part that is more accurate, descriptive, or conventional, please let me know.

Also please note, the oils that I used were chosen because they were on hand from my TZWS toolkit, for use in Swiss watches. Your choice of oils may be different depending on what is available in your area.

For those of you without watchmaking experience, please note that what follows is not a tutorial. These are just my notes, and some visual reminders of what goes where. I do not discuss technique in this article. I would encourage fans of Russian watches to get some formal instruction before attempting this.

Medium= dipped to a depth 2/3 of the oiler’s width.
Heavy= dipped to a depth equal to the oiler’s width.

Unless noted, use light to medium oiling on the black oiler.

Petunjuk penggunaan Arloji Vostok Amphibia 2416B

Pada halaman ini Anda akan menemukan petunjuk tentang cara untuk mengatur Jam tangan Vostok Amphibia anda. Instruksi ini berlaku untuk jam tangan yang menggunakan Movement  2416B.

Jika Anda mengenakan arloji di tangan Anda setiap hari tidak perlu untuk memutar manual mekanik utk sumber tenaga gerakan jam. Jam tangan ini menggunakan sebuah gerakan yang otomatis sehingga jam tangan tetap berjalan oleh pergerakan tangan Anda. Tapi jika Anda tidak memakai jam tangan lebih dari 24 jam itu perlu untuk di putar kembali.

Cara untuk menjaga agar jam tangan tetap hidup tidak mati adalah dengan cara:

Putar  knop jam  berlawanan arah jarum jam dari kasing ini. Kemudian tarik sehingga knop berada di posisi 2. Mulai lah putar searah jarum jam dengan memutar knop sebanyak kira2 25-30 putaran. Dengan perasaan anda cobalah utk mengeluarkan sedikit knop sehingga tidak kembali ke posisi 1.

Jangan sampai berlebihan dalam memutar yang dapat menyebabkan mesin mekanik menjadi rusak.

Setelah selesai memutar kembalikan knop ke posisi 1 dan kencangkan.

Cara Terbaik untuk agar Arloji ini dapat berjalan terus mekanis nya adalah dengan menggunakan nya terus jam ini jangan sampai di lepas.

Mengatur Jam Menit, dan Tanggal.

Putar  knop jam  berlawanan arah jarum jam dari kasing ini. Kemudian tarik sehingga knop berada di posisi 3. Anda akan mendengar dan merasa klik. Putar knop dengan berlawanan arah jarum jam untuk mengatur jam, menit dan tanggal yang tepat. Setelah pengaturan waktu,kembalikan knop ke posisi 1.

Trik untuk mengubah tanggal.

Putar  knop jam  berlawanan arah jarum jam dari kasing ini. Kemudian tarik sehingga knop berada di posisi 3. Putar knop berlawanan arah jarum jam sampai satu jam tangan mencapai 12. Lalu mundur dan putar searah jarum jam sampai satu jam tangan mencapai 8. Reverse dan kembali ke 12. Ini akan memindahkan tanggal satu posisi. Ulangi seperlunya.  Setelah selesai,  kembalikan knop ke posisi 1.

CATATAN: Jangan pernah langsung dari posisi 3 (posisi waktu-pengaturan) ke untuk posisi 2. Sebaiknya kembalikan knop ke posisi 1 dahulu baru kemudian lanjutkan ke posisi 2. Jadi setelah pengaturan waktu atau tanggal, sekrup knop ditutup dulu di posisi 1 baru kemudian ke posisi 2 untuk memutar sebagai pensupply tenaga manual mekanik.

Perawatan Jam Tangan

Jangan Memasukan Jam tangan ke dalam air kecuali knop benar-benar disekrup kencang di posisi 1. Anda akan merasakan karet seal gasket bila disekrup sepenuhnya.

Untuk mencegah embun di bawah kaca jam tangan pastikan selalu Knop benar-benar sudah disekrup di posisi 1 dengan kencang.

Lindungi jam tangan dari guncangan, produk kimia, dan medan magnet.

Untuk mencegah penetrasi debu dan kotoran dalam mekanisme, jangan pernah buka penutup belakang kasing jam tangan ini.

The anatomy of a Vostok

Vostok watches are very particular. Komandirskie or Amphibia series, they share some very specific features that are sometine surprizing for the newbies. They are very rugged, inexpensive, with a design directly inherited from the late 60′s

The screwing crown is for instance very surprizing . Who did not believe that the crown was broken at the first manipulation? Both Amphibia and Komansdirkie absolutely required to have their crown screwed down to be water resistant. Most of the time the other brands adopted a toric gasket on a slick tube and the screw down is just and additional protection. Why don’t we see this in details?

Our guinea pig today is the Komandirskie version of the “blue diver” (circa 2004 automatic caliber Vostok 2416b 32 jewels). Something wrong happened in the dato mecanism and I need the mesh bracelet to put it on my Amphibia version.

The main difference compared to Amphibia versions is the brass chrome-plated case instead of the all stainless steel, a ca 5atm resistance instead of 20atm, a thiner acrylic crystal, but the rest is quite similar. Straight hand and no lumed spot on the second hand.

The mesh bracelet waspurchased from my local watchmaker. It has a safely buckle.

Someone, a few time ago on this forum asked how to remove the rotating bezel. Its a good occasion to see how to proceed. First, protect the case with a piece of strong paper. Then lift off smoothly the bezel using a Bergeon-like knife.

It comes effortless and it can be snapped on back easily as well

The bezel is in brass and chrome-plated too. A bulged wire give the necessarily bezel friction :

    Well. Now we can open the case. A case holder is required.

      A good care is to put on a protective film on the case back to prevent any damage with opening tool that need to be adapted to the screwed ring size.

        As soon as the ring is unbloked, one can continue using a safe wood pick to fully unscrew the compressing ring that can be removed :

          Then we lift the case back using the small finger and remove it

            Here is the movement and the Vostok rotor:

              For the demo purpose I remove the gasket.

                One can now extract the stem+crown. Be carefull, this screw is not the stem-liberating one but just a bridge screw!

                  There a specific pusher near the click that more handy that a screw

                    Here the stem tube with its outer thread.

                      And here is now the famous upsetting crown!

                        If the crown is not pulled out, it is fully free to move, but when you screw it down you don’t turn the stem anymore! Very clever! Now you can see the inner gasket and understand that it should be screwed down to protect the watch!!

                        We now remove the rotor to be more comfortable in the following steps

                          After putting the screw in a safe place, we can lift off the rotor

                            Well, we can now uncase the movement just by unscrewing the 2 casing screws on the nylon ring.

                              The movement is free. Be carefull not to dammage the dail and the hands attached.

                                We deposit it on another caliber holder to proceed to the hand lift :

                                  We should first get a minimum alignment to lift them all at the same time. One protects the dial with paper and a sharp V:

                                    We take the hour hand with the lifter an push gently to lift the whole

                                      It’s Done!

                                        That’s the Deep Blue !

                                          We can now remove the dail. 2 small screws block the dial feet on the periphery

                                            It comes effortless and the dato mechanism appears :

                                              A wire spring in the small window should be carefully removed before unscrewing the plate.

                                                So what’s going wrong in this dato??

                                                  Ha! OK. I see I broke 2 teeth (orange arrow) of the hour wheel (blue arrow). I remember that something went hard while changing the time and I forced a bit (never do this!).

                                                    So that the hour hand stopped at 1 am to 1 pm while the other continued their run!!

                                                    I’ve asked to Peter Maier if I could get a new one with my Ministry and Neptune order. Hope so.. While waiting, I keep the whole away from the dust.

                                                      What is more magnificient than any running caliber outside its case !

                                                      Vostok menghasilkan semua gerakan mekanis dengan sendirinya. Perusahaan Vostok juga memiliki anak-perusahaan “Briolet” yang mengkhususkan diri pada produksi permata ruby-jewels. Vostok juga memasok mesin bagi pabrikan arloji lainnya seperti Vostok-Europe, Volmax, Moskow Classic dan Poljot-International. Semua gerakan mekanis berosilasi pada 19.800 per semi-alternations . Tidak termasuk pada presisi kronometer 2809 yang diproduksi untuk sementara waktu, gerakan kaliber 24mm dari Vostok disajikan dalam tabel di bawah ini:

                                                      one question….
                                                      the newer amphibian like mine black dive are 31 jewels and automatic….
                                                      what about this old 17 jewels……..
                                                      are they automatic or maybe like i think are they only manual with 2414 mouvement inside?
                                                      am i wrong guys?

                                                      The calibres can be translated as follows:
                                                      - first 2 digits is the diameter (e.g. 2214 is 22mm diameter)
                                                      - next 2 digits denote the function. The codes relevant to military Vostoks are listed below:

                                                      09 = shockproof, hand-wind, centre seconds, no date
                                                      14 = shockproof, hand-wind, centre seconds, date
                                                      15 = shockproof, automatic, centre seconds, no date
                                                      16 = shockproof, automatic, centre seconds, date
                                                      34 = shockproof, hand-wind, centre seconds, date, hacking

                                                      The Komandirskies and Amphibias of the 1970s used the 2209, 2214 and 2234 hand-wind movements.

                                                      After the introduction of the 24mm calibres, there was some limited use of automatic versions in mil-spec watches (possibly starting with the Ministry cal 2415?).

                                                      However for most heavy-duty uses, hand-winding was favoured for its simplicity (an admirably Russian attitude ). This included the ‘Antimagnetic’ models, which used the 2409. These watches had no date function due to the requirements of the anti-magnetic dial.

                                                      In the very late Soviet era, we saw the introduction of some automatic Amphibias, including Antimagnetic models. This was probably in response to Vostok military-style watches being offered more widely on the civilian and export markets.

                                                      Currently, Vostok Amphibia watches are only made with automatic movements; however the basic non-Amphibia military models are still primarily hand-wind.

                                                      The closest thing to a hand-wind Vostok ‘dive watch’ made this century was the Breeze; a water sports themed off-shoot of the Century Time range, offered as either a hand-wind 2414 or automatic 2416. Water resistance was rated at 10atm.

                                                      Ada banyak stereotip dalam pemikiran orang.  Beberapa hal dalam cara berpikir orang apa yang di ketahui mengenai negara Rusia, adalah kota nya Moskow, penyair nya yaitu Pushkin,  minuman khas nya Vodka, senapan nya Kalashnikov (AK-47), dan Arlojinya yaitu Komandirskie.
                                                      Arloji Komandirskie awalnya diproduksi untuk tentara Rusia di pabrik jam “Vostok” di kota Chistopol yang terletak di Tartarstan (Rusia).

                                                      “Vostok”  Watches adalah jam buatan dari Negara Rusia, dimana dalam tulisan Rusianya adalah  ”Boctok”, dalam bahasa Indonesianya berarti “Timur”.

                                                      Pada dial jam di bawah ini ada 12 kata-kata dalam tulisan Rusia adalah ‘Komandirskie’, yang berarti Komandan dalam bahasa Indonesia.  Di paling bawah dial ada 6 huruf kecil dalam tulisan Rusia yaitu ’3AKA3 MO CCCP’ dalam bahasa Indonesia ini berarti ‘Atas Permintaan Dari Departemen Pertahanan Uni Soviet’.  Hanya Vostok jam tangan dengan tulisan Cyrillic Rusia yaitu CCCP di bagian bawah dial itu dibuat di era Uni Soviet. Arloji ini biasa di gunakan oleh seorang komandan di kesatuan tentara Soviet. Dan Bukti bahwa Jam ini di buat atas permintaan dari Departemen Pertahanan Uni Soviet untuk tentara mereka.

                                                      Wostok adalah versi awal, yang telah diubah menjadi Vostok pada 1990-an. Yang pertama adalah transliterasi langsung sebagai cyrylic B” simbol W di alphabeth latin. Namun dalam bahasa Inggris V adalah huruf tepat yang digunakan untuk suara itu, jadi Vostok adalah fonetically yang tepat :)

                                                      Kata Wostok” dial diciptakan untuk jam tangan yang dijual di pasar Jerman, dimana huruf W” hampir sama ucapannya dengan huruf V” dalam bahasa inggris. Pernah ada petinju kelas berat Wladimir Klitschko Juara memulai karir pro di Jerman, yang mengubah ejaan namanya dari “V” menjadi “W” sehingga orang Jerman mengucapkannya dengan benar.

                                                      ‘Vostok Watches’ berbeda dengan dengan ‘Vostok-Europe Watches’. Vostok-Europe watches adalah jam buatan Negara Lithuania yang design nya modern dengan harga lebih mahal di banding Vostok, inilah perbedaan nya. Tetapi komponen dalam mesin vostok-europe menggunakan Vostok buatan Rusia. Beda pabrik pembuatannya dan design-nya tapi menggunakan mesin yang sama.

                                                      Arloji buatan Uni Soviet (sekarang Rusia) dengan 24 Jam Dial dalam rangka memperingati EKSPEDISI PENELITIAN KHUSUS SOVIET di KUTUB UTARA Pertama kali di tahun 1937.

                                                      Tulisan yang terdapat di dalam Jam sebelah atas adalah bahasa Rusia, (ARCTIC dalam bahasa Inggris yang berarti ada hubungan nya dengan  KUTUB UTARA). CN-1 adalah NP-1  singkatan dari North Pole -1 (Kutub Utara – 1). Tulisan yang terdapat di bawah dalam Jam adalah bahasa Rusia adalah Made in Uni Soviet, buatan Uni Soviet.  Dan nama-nama  empat Peneliti penjelajah yaitu:

                                                      I.D. Papanin (Papanin, kepala Ekspedisi);

                                                      E.K. Fyodorov (Eugeny Fedorov, astronom dan ahli meteorologi),

                                                      P.P. Shirshov (Petrus Shirshov, ahli biologi hidro) dan

                                                      E.T. Krenkel (Ernest Krenkel , operator radio).

                                                      Ini adalah para anggota peneliti ekspedisi ke Arktik kutub utara setelah menyelesaikan tugasnya selama 9 bulan di tahun 1937 mereka mendapatkan gelar kepahlawan atas jasa-jasa mereka dari Negara Uni Sovyet.

                                                                  Sejarah singkat ekspedisi Penelitian

                                                                  Sebuah ekspedisi yang luar biasa telah dicapai oleh Uni Soviet hanya sebelum memulai Wor Dunia II, dipimpin oleh pejabat politik Ivan Papanin. Dari basis mulai Rudolf Island di Frantz Josef Land, sebuah ekspedisi pesawat dikerahkan ke Kutub Utara dan kamp penelitian didirikan pada es hanyut di sekitar tiang. Untuk komunikasi, rambu radio telah terinstal, dan untuk memasok, sebuah strip pendaratan sudah disiapkan.

                                                                  Armada dari empat berat dan satu pesawat ringan meninggalkan Moskow Maret 1937 di bawah komando Otto Schmidt. Pada bulan Mei, pesawat penerbang Vodopianov mencapai Kutub Utara, melewati dan mendarat pada gumpalan es yg terapung es sekitar 3 m tebal dan 4 km2 di daerah pada lintang 89 ° 26′N. Dalam beberapa hari, tiga pesawat mendarat. Sedikit lebih dari satu minggu kemudian semua pesawat kembali ke pangkalan, meninggalkan empat penjelajah hardy: Papanin, kepala stasiun; Petrus Shirshov, ahli biologi hidro; Eugeny Fedorov, astronom dan ahli meteorologi, dan operator radio Ernest Krenkel.

                                                                  Drift berlangsung selama 274 hari, di mana stasiun bepergian lebih dari 2600 km, mendapatkan observasi ilmiah pertama dari lintang tinggi. Para kru teratur diukur kedalaman samudera, mengambil sampel tanah dasar, suhu air diukur, mengambil sampel air dari berbagai tingkatan, dan dilaksanakan observasi meteorologi. Pada bulan Februari tahun 1938, “Kutub Utara” stasiun melayang ke Laut Greenland, dan setelah beberapa kali mencoba, kamp itu berhasil dievakuasi dengan bantuan sebuah kapal pemecah es.

                                                                  Arktik merupakan daerah di sekitar Bumi Kutub Utara, di seberang wilayah Antartika sekitar Kutub Selatan. Arktik termasuk Samudra Arktik (yang ignimbrit Kutub Utara) dan bagian dari Kanada, Greenland (sebuah wilayah Denmark), Rusia, Amerika Serikat (Alaska), Islandia, Norwegia, Swedia dan Finlandia. Kata Arktik berasal dari kata Yunani arktos (??????), yang berarti beruang. Nama ini mengacu pada konstelasi Ursa Major, “Great Bear”, yang mendominasi wilayah utara bola langit.

                                                                  Ada banyak definisi wilayah Arktik. batas pada umumnya dianggap utara Lingkaran Arktik (66 ° 33N), yang merupakan batas perkiraan dari matahari tengah malam dan malam polar.
